Grotta Giusti, as beautiful today as it was then, is the largest thermal cave in Europe. It is the gem of our resort, one of a kind in the entire world.
The history of Grotta Giusti begins in 1849 on a hill overlooking the town of Monsummano. A group of labourers who worked in a quarry discovered the cavity and went down into the mysterious natural well.
There lay a wondrous spectacle of nature: stalactites and stalagmites that hung from the vaults and rose from the floor, corridors and underground rooms, a lake of clear, warm water that filled the rooms with steam.
The birth of the steam baths
The explorers realised that the steam had beneficial effects.
The news attracted the interest of doctors, who found scientific confirmation of the clinical efficacy of the treatment.
Thus, the Giusti family began the construction of the spa.
The fame of “steam baths” and their effects began to spread. In 1867, Giuseppe Garibaldi also underwent thermal therapy at the Grotta and thanked the owners in a letter.
In 1880, the Albergo Reale (the Royal Hotel) was built, accommodating, among others, the Prince of Naples and Giuseppe Verdi, who called the cave “the eighth wonder of the world”.
Over the years, the cave has had considerable changes which have made the path inside it much safer, without altering its original beauty.
